How to set up WooCommerce to Twilio SMS

Here is the whole setup for connecting WooCommerce to Twilio SMS, so you know what to have ready before you start. Most of it takes a few minutes in Twilio SMS and in WooCommerce.

1. Copy your account SID and sender

In the Twilio console copy the Account SID and Auth Token. Then choose the sender: a Twilio phone number or a Messaging Service SID. Keep the Auth Token private.

2. Find your WooCommerce order details

Decide which order status sends the data: Processing (payment received) or Completed (order fulfilled). Ora maps billing first name, last name, email, phone and company from the order.

3. Choose who gets which text

Numbers must be in international format starting with a plus sign, for example +4477. Decide whether the text goes to the customer, to you, or both, and what it says. Keep it short, since longer texts are split and cost more.

4. Describe it to Ora

5. Test on the practice site

Place a test order on the practice site using Cash on Delivery or a 100 percent coupon, move it to your chosen status, then check Twilio SMS. Place a test that sends to your own phone and check it arrives. Then open Monitor, Logs in Twilio to see the delivery status.

Common snags:

A Twilio trial account can only text numbers you have verified.
Texting people needs their consent, and replies like STOP must be honoured.
Some countries require your sender to be registered before messages are delivered.
